Project Overview
KARM DESIGN was tasked with the complete manufacture of a lobe rotor pump originally produced in Hastelloy B3. The OEM no longer supplied the unit, and the client required a full re-engineering solution that would maintain chemical resistance while improving performance, precision, and durability.
Solution
Our team reproduced the full assembly — including rotors, shafts, gears, and rotor housing — while introducing key engineering and process enhancements:
- Material Specification: Original Hastelloy B3 retained for its exceptional chemical resistance and process compatibility.
- Lobe Rotors: Manufactured using improved CNC and EDM machining processes to deliver greater dimensional accuracy of the lobe profiles and improved spline fit.
- Drive & Intermediate Shafts: Produced using enhanced machining and spline finishing techniques for tighter tolerances and superior alignment.
- Rotor Case: CNC-machined from solid forged bar stock rather than cast, improving dimensional control, strength, and surface finish.
- Surface Engineering: All components received an advanced low-friction surface treatment to significantly reduce wear, friction, and the risk of adhesive damage during operation.
Results
Enhanced Accuracy
Precision-machined components improved pump balance and mechanical efficiency.
Extended Service Life
Advanced surface treatment reduced wear and friction in critical contact areas.
Improved Reliability
Forged and precision-machined construction increased robustness and stability.
Exceeding OEM Quality
The final assembly delivered higher durability, precision, and operational life than the original design.
This project highlights KARM DESIGN’s advanced manufacturing and surface engineering expertise, delivering complete high-precision assemblies that outperform OEM equivalents in demanding service environments.
